Debut author Nathan Filer surprised everyone today by winning the Costa Book of the Year Award for his book The Shock of the Fall (Filer won the Costa First Novel Award earlier this month.) 

The author, whose work as a mental health nurse inspired the story about a young man’s descent into schizophrenia, will continue in his day job alongside his work as a lecturer in creative writing. The novel, a sort of  The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time book for mental illness, looks promising! Just started…will let you know.
